Food and Beverages

Depending on the current plan, your day begins with a hearty breakfast followed by a game drive. But maybe your Ranger has also made a discovery that he wants to show you before breakfast?

Lunch will be served upon return to the lodge, but can also take place as a picnic in the bush. Let yourself be surprised

The evening begins with a sundowner on the deck of the lodge accompanied by the magnificent scenery of the Drakensberg.

Dine under the stars - never was dinner so romantic: in the rustic boma of the Karongwe River Lodge excellent pan-African cuisine is served. In case of cooler weather, you can dine in the traditional ambience of the dining room. Select a South African wine or an imported beer and the evening will remain long in your memory.

Karongwe Game Reserve is situated in a Low Malaria Area. We still recommend you visit your GP before travelling to the Lodges.

Traversing over the 9000 hectares of supreme African bushveld, the Karongwe Reserve is home to the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhino and Elephant) as well as a wealth of other creatures. Our open vehicle game drives are perfect for game viewing. Enjoy a sundowner while the sun sets over the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains.

The magnificent game viewing makes for perfect photographic opportunities; enjoy the view of the Lowveld from a “kopje” amid the lush vegetation, huge variety of trees and over 365 different bird species. Game drives are conducted with our qualified game rangers and Shangaan trackers – who will share their vast experience of the African Bush and a chance to view Cheetah on foot.

Client Reviews

average rating:

I stayed 3 nights at the lodge and found the game drives and staff in particular excellent. There are two drives per day, early morning at 6am and afternoon at 3pm each lasting 3 hours. We saw all of the big 5 by the second drive. If you arrive in time for the afternoon drive on your arrival day and manage another before leaving on your departure day then I personally think 2 nights is enough here. That would give you 4 drives. We actually skipped 2 drives one day and drove ourselves to Kruger just for a different experience. You can reach the gates in just over an hour from the lodge. Staff were excellent at the lodge, food was good but not outstanding. The setting itself is very nice and with a river right by the lodge we were lucky enough to see a leopard drinking there one morning directly across from our balcony.
