The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Baa Atoll is one of 26 natural atolls in the Indian Ocean and lies on the edge of the open ocean where the water drops to a great depth. The geographical location is unique in the world. Reefs, overhangs and so-called “thilas” – small, rounded underwater mountains – provide a natural habitat for around 1,200 reef species.

Life and existence in a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve is an obligation. Finolhu operates largely self-sufficiently, and the motto “No Plastic” is lived everywhere on the island.
